ADDRESSING COMMON INSTALLATION ISSUES WITH BABY GATES
IMPORTANT INSTALLATION DISCLAIMER
These installations demand a certain level of expertise; embarking on this task without engaging a professional could result in risks and additional costs.
By exploring this article, you confirm that you have read and accepted the terms and conditions outlined here: Website Terms & Conditions.
The following scenarios illustrate various challenges I have faced during installations, which may resonate with your own situation and provide useful solutions.
INSTALLATION CHALLENGE 1: UNEVEN SURFACE
SOLVING THE ISSUE OF AN UNEVEN SURFACE

-
- Measure the widest point at the top to ascertain the required size for the gate and any necessary extensions. (CLICK HERE FOR MEASURING GUIDELINES).
- Once you have the gates/extensions, utilise an angle grinder fitted with a metal/aluminium disc to cut the gate accurately, following the measurements shown in the reference images above.
- Detach the plastic component from the section you intend to remove and insert it into the cut part of the gate to ensure proper fitting of the tension knob.
- This process will become clearer once you have the gate on hand.
INSTALLATION CHALLENGE 2: MOUNTING ON A SKEW WALL
RESOLVING THE CHALLENGE OF MOUNTING ON A SKEW WALL

STEPS TO FOLLOW:
-
- Ensure that the gate/extensions are already prepared for installation.
- Employ Pratley Putty Quickset to fill any gaps and create a level surface on the wall.
- Wait for the Putty to cure thoroughly BEFORE tightening the tension knobs to securely attach the gate using pressure.
- Do not depend on the gate for safety until all procedures are complete and the gate has been tested for stability.
INSTALLATION CHALLENGE 3: OUTDOOR INSTALLATION OF BABY GATES
ADDRESSING THE CHALLENGE OF INSTALLING A BABY GATE OUTSIDE
While installing baby gates outdoors can be a cost-effective and quick solution, it may also invalidate the warranty on these gates.

I advise that outdoor installations of baby gates be considered only as a temporary and economical solution. This may risk voiding your warranty on the gates.
-
- Baby gates are specifically designed for indoor applications and are not suitable for outdoor use due to potential exposure to harsh weather conditions.
- This limitation is clearly stated in the warranty documentation that accompanies the product.
- Non-compliance with warranty stipulations will result in the forfeiture of warranty coverage.
For a long-lasting solution, consider hiring a contractor who specialises in security or latch gates. Although this may involve higher costs, it is the most effective approach.
PREPARING THE BABY GATE AND EXTENSIONS FOR USE OUTDOORS:
Disclaimer: None of these measures guarantee complete rust protection; however, they aim to prolong the lifespan of the gate in South African climatic conditions.
Regular treatment every 1-2 months can significantly reduce the risk of rust.
To minimise rust and moisture accumulation, follow these guidelines:
-
- Prior to installation, treat the baby gate, extensions, and mounting kit, ensuring to cover surface areas at the base as well.
- Drill holes at the bottom of the gate using an 8mm steel drill bit. This will allow water to drain and prevent rust from forming inside the hollow gate, where moisture may collect at joints, connectors, and tension knobs. The holes will provide ventilation to avert moisture build-up.
- Apply a light coating of Rustoleum Painters Touch 2X Ultra Cover – Satin Clear 340g, available at takealot.com, to the baby gate, extensions, and mounting kit.
- Allow to dry completely (approximately 2 hours), then apply a second coat.
For existing rust:
-
- Spray the affected areas with Rust-Oleum Rust Reformer 291g, following the product guidelines.
- Consult the product description on takealot.com; you may need to acquire mineral spirits to clean any overspray on non-rusted areas.
- The rust reformer will convert rust to a black colour, which should then be coated with Rust-Oleum Stops Rust Enamel Gloss White 340g, available on takealot.com.
